'Fore' The Future

Golf and sustainability might not seem like an obvious pair, but there’s so much happening to make the game more eco-friendly. Every month, we’ll dive into some examples of how golf is embracing the environment and share how we’re applying those ideas to what we do at Stanners. It’s all about keeping the game we love sustainable—for the planet, the course, and future generations.

The Greenest DP World Tour Championship in Dubai

This year’s DP World Tour Championship in Dubai is being hailed as its most sustainable event to date, setting a new benchmark for eco-conscious golf tournaments. Plastic water bottles were eliminated in favour of refill stations, an initiative that has already saved over 120,000 bottles. On the course, innovative water-saving measures such as modular waterless urinals and ceasing the overseeding of greens have conserved more than 20 million litres of water annually.

Energy efficiency also took centre stage, with IoT-enabled electric machinery replacing traditional diesel-powered equipment for course preparation, significantly cutting emissions. Solar-powered lighting further reduced energy usage by 30%, while ambitious waste management practices ensured zero waste was sent to landfill. These efforts, which include food composting and advanced ORCA technology, were supported by a ban on single-use plastic cutlery and straws.

By combining thoughtful planning with impactful action, the tournament serves as an inspiring example of how golf events can lead the charge toward sustainability.

Vineyard Golf Club: A Leader in Organic Golf Course Management

Located in Edgartown, Massachusetts, the Vineyard Golf Club has become a beacon of sustainable golf course management. Established in 2002, the course was developed in response to community concerns over pesticide pollution and has since proven the value of organic methods. The club uses compost fertilizers and biological pest controls, such as beneficial nematodes that target harmful beetle larvae, to maintain its grounds without synthetic chemicals.

The club also takes an innovative approach to course maintenance by rolling greens to prevent disease and testing new eco-friendly practices in designated plots. Superintendent Kevin Banks credits these efforts with creating resilient turfgrass that strengthens over time, reducing the need for reactive interventions. Transparency with members has been key, with regular updates fostering a sense of shared responsibility for the club’s sustainable mission. Vineyard Golf Club’s achievements show how the golf industry can embrace organic practices while maintaining playability and community support.

By adopting these measures, we ensure that our operations have a reduced ecological footprint.

In addition, we are continuing to seek ways to integrate sustainability into our day-to-day business. From creating apparel that is durable and long-lasting to reducing waste in production, our approach aligns with the growing movement within golf to prioritise the planet. Inspired by the success of initiatives like the DP World Tour Championship’s refill stations and the Vineyard Golf Club’s organic turf management, we remain committed to driving change within our industry.
